KHLOE

By silent agreement, Noah allows me to take on some more responsibilities around the house. He does little to disguise his displeasure over the matter, but I disregard it. I can’t stay here for free and not help out. It would feel like I’m taking advantage of the situation I find myself in, and I’d hate for Noah to see it that way. So between keeping Harper busy, and leaving Noah to sleep after each night shift, I do the washing, the cleaning, and the cooking. It only feels fair at this point.

It’s the fourth night Noah’s on duty at the hospital. One more night and he’ll be off for two days before swathing back to day shift for two weeks. I have his schedule memorized. Harper and I spend the day at the park, and around four p.m. I text Noah to find out if he’s awake. It’s a beautiful day outside, and Harper is still playing with a few kids who are here too. I’m waiting for Noah to reply when I hear a shout and look up. The kids have congregated around something and a few of the mothers rush over. The commotion has me doing the same. I step through the group of mothers and children, horrified to find Harper straddling a boy while landing a few punches to his face.

“Harper!” I snap, stepping forward to lift her up. That’s when I noticed the blood running down her nose. “What happened?”

“She hit my son!” a mother snaps.

I straighten from my crouched position in front of Harper and freeze when I come face-to-face with a real blast from the past. Other than my run-in with Kristen Davenport a few weeks ago, I haven’t really bumped into anyone I knew from high school, and I was glad about that. Now, however, it’s Kristen’s best friend, Lacey Brookes, who’s scowling at me. Her brown hair hangs loose over her shoulders, and she is dressed to the nines even though we’re at the park. I’m not a brand person myself, Target is just fine for me, but I know designer when I see it.

“Khloe?” she screeches. Her tone is a healthy and terrifying mix of anger and surprise.

“Lacey.”

Her scowl deepens, but I can hardly tell. I’m sure it's Botox. “That’s your daughter?”

Why she sounds appalled by the idea is beyond me. Rather than respond to that, I look back down at Harper. “What happened?” I murmur, worried her nose is broken.

Harper tilts her chin in defiance. “He hit me first, Khloe.” She points at her bloody nose. “So I hit him back.”

“That’s not true!” Lacey snaps. She makes a move to grab Harper by the arm, but I’m faster, pulling Harper behind me before straightening. Lacey is furious and adamant that Harper hit her son first which I don’t believe for a second.

Another mom comes to our defense, someone I don’t know. “Actually,” she says to Lacey, “Your son hit Harper first, and she was just defending herself.”

A relieved breath leaves my chest.
